Fish New Zealand’s Wild North

Based at Mangawhai Heads in Northland, on New Zealand’s North Island, our fully hosted fishing adventures put you within reach of some of the best fishing grounds in the country.

From Bream Bay and the Hen & Chicken Islands to the remote Mokohinau Islands, Little Barrier and, when conditions allow, Great Barrier Island, every day gives us somewhere different to explore.

Cold, food-rich water is what sets this coast apart — it grows fish with real weight behind them. The marlin, tuna, kingfish and snapper here are the size you travel for, and you’ll know it the moment one loads up the rod.

Stay with us in Mangawhai and fish aboard our private 8-metre Surtees Game Fisher. With a fast boat and experienced crew, we can go further, explore more and put you in the best action each day.

From the moment you arrive, we'll have you hooked.

Meet Johnny — Your Aussie Guide

An Aussie Who Came For a Look and Never Went Home

“I came to New Zealand looking for an adventure. More than 25 years later, I’m still here — and there’s still more to explore.”

I grew up on Victoria’s south coast — fishing, surfing, and living on the water. I first came to New Zealand in 1999 and never went back. The surfing and fishing here had me hooked.

After 25 years exploring New Zealand’s coastline, I launched Eco Adventures to share what I’d found with people back home.

When you book with us you deal directly with me — not a booking platform, not a call centre. We pick you up from Auckland Airport, host you throughout your stay, and we’re on the water with you every day.

The Eco Adventures Difference

So Much More Than Just Catching Trophy Fish

It’s standing on the bow as the sun rises over the Pacific. Gannets diving into feeding workups. Remote islands few visitors ever reach. The weight of a proper fish coming up out of deep, cold water. Stories over dinner after a day chasing snapper, kingfish, tuna and marlin. And the warmth and hospitality that make New Zealand one of the world’s most loved destinations.

    Manaaki

Our Surtees 800 Game Fisher, Manaaki, was previously known as Holy Ship from the Fishing & Adventure TV show.

Manaaki means to look after, care for and protect in te reo Māori, a fitting name for the way we approach our time on the ocean.

Powered by twin 225hp outboards with a cruise speed of 30kts and equipped with triple transducers, night vision and bird radar, she’s a purpose-built fishing machine, customised to take us further and deliver exceptional fishing experiences in comfort — including an onboard toilet for those longer runs.

    Doing Things a Little Differently

The Fish Are Part of the Adventure, Not the Measure of Success

The charter industry has traditionally focused on catch numbers and trophy photos. Our vision has always been different. We believe the future of fishing lies in creating meaningful experiences, educating people about the marine environment, promoting responsible fishing, and helping more people build a genuine connection with the ocean.

We’re proud to be one of the few fishing charter companies in the world that puts sustainability and community before profit.

The fishing is world-class, but it’s not the whole story.

Partnering with Shimano for Good Reason

    Why Shimano Backs Eco Adventures

We share a simple belief: the future of fishing depends on protecting what makes it special in the first place.

Shimano is recognised around the world for some of the highest-quality fishing equipment available — built on decades of innovation and reliability. We choose Shimano because we want our guests to experience the very best, whether it’s a first snapper or a trophy kingfish.

    Good Questions

Do I need previous fishing experience?
Not at all. Our guides give you all the instruction you need, whether you’re a complete beginner or a seasoned angler. We’re here to make sure everyone has a great time.
What types of fish can we catch?
Depending on the season: snapper, kingfish, trevally, kahawai, john dory and more. For a little more action we also target marlin, tuna, hapuka and swordfish. Your guide takes you to the best spots for the season and conditions. These are big-fish waters — what comes over the side here tends to have real size on it.
    Can you process my catch?
Yes. We can process, fillet, smoke and pack your catch for an additional cost. Let us know what you’d like and we’ll arrange it.
Can I bring my catch back into Australia?
Australian rules allow each person to bring home up to 5 kg of processed or filleted fish. Check the current requirements on the Australian Government’s Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry website (opens in a new tab) before you travel.
Is food provided on the charter?
Yes. Lunch, snacks, water and non-alcoholic drinks keep you fuelled through the day. Tell us about any dietary requirements when you book. Mangawhai has a local supermarket and great shops for anything else you’d like to bring.
    How do I prevent seasickness?
Stay hydrated, eat a light meal beforehand, focus on the horizon, and consider remedies like ginger, wristbands or medication. If you use seasickness medication, manufacturers advise taking it a day in advance — read the label carefully.
    Is it suitable for children?
If you’d like to bring anyone under 12, talk to us first so we can make sure we can safely accommodate you and your guests, or suggest the best options.
What happens if the weather is bad?
Your safety comes first. If conditions aren’t favourable we have options: changing our port of departure and fishing grounds, or rescheduling days. If we have to cancel a day and none of those options work with your plans, we refund unused days in full.
What if someone travelling with us doesn’t want to fish?
We get it — not everyone wants several days on the water. We offer onshore guided experiences from golf, hiking and spa treatments to 5-star dining and sightseeing. Just ask and we’ll tailor the perfect day for everyone.
Can we add more accommodation nights?
Absolutely, and plenty of guests do. Mixing your days on the water with days exploring the area is a good way to get more out of the trip. Tell us how long you’d like to stay and we’ll build it into your package.
