Pest-Free Hauraki Gulf Biosecurity Policy

Our Commitment

We are proud to operate within the Hauraki Gulf Marine Park — one of New Zealand’s most treasured and ecologically sensitive environments. Many of the Gulf’s islands are pest-free sanctuaries that protect endangered species such as kiwi, tuatara, seabirds, and wētāpunga.
To protect these special places, our vessel operates under a strict Pest-Free Hauraki Gulf Biosecurity Policy in line with the Department of Conservation (DOC) and Auckland Council Biosecurity standards.

Before You Come Aboard

All passengers, crew, and gear must be free from introduced pests, soil, and plant material. Please:

  • Check your bags and boxes for rodents, ants, skinks, insects, and seeds.

  • Clean footwear and clothing — remove soil, sand, and seeds before arrival.

  • Seal all food containers to avoid attracting pests.

  • Avoid bringing any live animals, plants, or perishable goods that could carry insects or disease.

  • Use pest-proof storage such as sealed chilly bins and zip-lock bags for all gear and food.

Our crew will provide a biosecurity briefing before departure and may inspect luggage or containers if required.

Onboard Procedures

  • All rubbish, food waste, and organic material remain on board until returned to port.

  • No unapproved off-loading of equipment or food is permitted at pest-free islands.

  • The skipper may restrict access to islands or beaches if any contamination or biosecurity risk is identified.

  • Any pest sightings (rodents, ants, insects, etc.) must be reported immediately to the skipper.

At Pest-Free Islands

When visiting pest-free islands such as Tāwharanui, Tiritiri Matangi, Kawau, or the Mokohinau Islands:

  • Follow DOC signage and island ranger instructions.

  • Remain on designated tracks and respect conservation zones.

  • Do not remove or disturb natural materials (shells, plants, feathers, etc.).

  • Return all personal gear and waste to the vessel.

Reporting and Compliance

Our vessel follows the Pest Free Warrant standards and may undergo periodic inspections by DOC or Auckland Council.
If you suspect you’ve seen a pest on an island, contact 0800 DOC HOT (362 468) as soon as possible.

Together We Protect

By following these guidelines, every guest plays an important part in protecting the Hauraki Gulf’s unique wildlife and ensuring it remains pest-free for generations to come.
